IC Employee Keith Anderson Honoured for Heroism

In life, there are some people who go out of their way to help others who are in need. Through their heroic acts, they may even end up saving the life of another person. Argus salutes those who go above and beyond the call of duty to help a stranger. In one instance, a Moncton IC employee, Keith Anderson, helped to save a woman's life. This is his story:

Keith Anderson is an Atlantic Region Spectrum Engineer. He is an active IC employee who normally bikes to work along a path on the Petitcodiac River. On June 20, 2000, as he approached the riverside bike path on his ride home, he saw an RCMP officer and a civilian paying close attention to what was in the water.

"They were walking along the riverbank, which is very difficult to approach because it is muddy. It appeared to me they were following something in the water." Sensing the urgency of the situation as they started to quicken their pace, Keith asked if they needed help. Tim Belliveau, the civilian and a colleague at the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) waved him over.

Keith went downstream, figuring he could catch whatever was in the water if the other two missed it. It was only on his way downstream that he realized it was a person in the water. "I could see her long black hair, and she was lying on her back, not moving very much." To Keith, the scary part was not knowing if the woman would come back up when she bobbed under the water.

Corporal Fox, the RCMP officer, and Tim caught up to Keith and formed a chain at the point just before the river widened out. Keith stuck his foot across the water as the other two held on to him so he didn't fall in himself. Knowing it was the last real chance to save her, Keith was terrified of her going past that point. "We would have had to make some tough decisions then." Fortunately, the woman was able to make the effort to grab Keith's foot and he pulled her out and onto the shore.

The three people involved in the rescue all received president's commendations from the St. John's Ambulance Association. While Keith was honoured by the recognition, he didn't feel it was necessary. "I sometimes wonder whether I really deserve it or not. I didn't put myself at any great risk. Anyone else who would have been there would have done the same thing."

Certaines personnes se donnent beaucoup de mal pour aider les gens dans le besoin. Elles contribuent même parfois à sauver des vies en posant des gestes héroïques. Argus rend hommage à ceux qui se dévouent pour aider leur prochain et Keith Anderson, employé d'Industrie Canada à Moncton, est de ce nombre, car il a contribué à sauver la vie d'une femme. Voici le récit de son acte d'héroïsme.

Ingénieur en radiodiffusion dans la région de l'Atlantique, Keith Anderson se rend généralement au travail à vélo, en empruntant le sentier qui longe la rivière Petitcodiac. Le 20 juin 2000, alors qu'il approchait de la piste cyclable après sa journée de travail, il aperçut un agent de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) et une autre personne qui examinaient quelque chose dans l'eau.

« Ils longeaient la berge où il est très difficile de s'aventurer en raison de la vase et ils semblaient suivre quelque chose dans l'eau. » Devinant l'urgence de la situation en les voyant presser le pas, Keith leur offre son assistance. Tim Belliveau, fonctionnaire de l'Agence de promotion économique du Canada atlantique (APECA), l'invite à se joindre à eux d'un signe de la main.

Keith s'engage dans l'eau en aval pour pouvoir rattraper ce qui se trouvait dans l'eau si les deux autres n'y parviennent pas. C'est seulement en descendant qu'il constate qu'il s'agit d'une femme. « Je pouvais voir ses longs cheveux noirs. Elle flottait sur le dos et ne bougeait presque pas. » Tout à coup, elle coule et Keith craint qu'elle ne remonte pas à la surface.

Tim et l'agent de la GRC, le caporal Fox, le rejoignent et tous trois forment une chaîne juste avant un élargissement de la rivière. Keith écarte les pieds pendant que les deux autres le retiennent pour l'empêcher de tomber. Conscient qu'il s'agissait de la dernière chance de repêcher la victime, Keith était terrifié à l'idée de ne pouvoir la saisir. « Il aurait alors fallu prendre des décisions difficiles. » Heureusement, la femme réussit à agripper le pied de Keith, qui la tire sur la berge.

Les trois sauveteurs ont reçu une mention élogieuse du président de l'Ambulance Saint-Jean. Bien que touché par ce geste, Keith n'en voyait pas la nécessité : « Je me demande parfois si je mérite vraiment un tel honneur. Personnellement, je n'ai jamais couru de grave danger. N'importe qui aurait fait la même chose s'il avait été à ma place. »
