A WIRELESS MILLENNIUM,

COMING RIGHT UP!

The Radio Advisory Board of Canada and Industry Canada are sponsoring a conference in the Spectrum 20/20 biennial series. The conference, entitled "Wireless Millennium", will be held December 2-3, 1998 in Ottawa.

Spectrum 20/20 is held every two years and focuses on the radio spectrum and its related industries. "Wireless Millennium" is the last conference before the year 2000. Because of this, the conference has been designed to give participants a clear picture of the spectrum-dependent industry and a strong sense of its direction in the next millennium.

Speakers from all aspects of the industry (users, service providers, infrastructure operators, manufacturers, regulators and designers) have been invited to share their knowledge. As in past years, the emphasis is on Canada, but there are speakers from Europe and the United States to widen the perspective.

Bob McCaughern, DGSE, Chairman of the Steering Committee, says that this year’s cast of speakers is the strongest yet. Terry Matthews of Newbridge Networks is the keynote speaker. IC’s own DM Kevin Lynch will speak on December 2. The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China will be the banquet speaker on December 2. His Excellency has indicated that his banquet speech will be in alignment with the theme of the conference, and we are looking forward to an interesting window on China’s telecommunications industry. Minister Manley will also attend part of the conference.

Le Conseil consultatif canadien de la radio et Industrie Canada parrainent conjointement la conférence intitulée « Wireless Millenium », qui se tiendra les 2 et 3 décembre 1998 à Ottawa. La conférence s'inscrit dans le cadre de la série Spectrum 20/20, événement bisannuel qui porte sur le spectre des radiofréquences et les industries connexes.

Comme il s'agit de la dernière conférence avant l'an 2000, celle-ci a été conçue de façon à tracer à l'intention des participants un portrait fidèle de l'industrie tributaire du spectre et à leur faire connaître son orientation future.

Des orateurs de tous les groupes de l'industrie (utilisateurs, fournisseurs de services, exploitants de l'infrastructure, fabricants, responsables de la réglementation et concepteurs) ont été invités à partager leurs connaissances. Comme par le passé, l'accent sera mis sur le Canada, mais des invités provenant d'Europe et des États-Unis apporteront une perspective plus vaste.

Selon Bob McCaughern, directeur général du Génie du spectre et président du comité directeur, le groupe d'orateurs n'a jamais été aussi intéressant. Terry Matthews, de Newbridge Networks, est l'orateur vedette. Kevin Lynch, sous-ministre d'Industrie Canada, et l'ambassadeur de la République populaire de Chine, conférencier au banquet, prendront la parole le 2 décembre. Ce dernier a indiqué que son allocution rejoindra le thème de la conférence. C'est avec impatience que nous attendons d'en apprendre davantage sur l'industrie des télécommunications sans fil en Chine. Le ministre Manley participera également à certains volets de la conférence.
