I received this message, and the interesting attachment, from Ron Amero. I asked him if we could use it and I think we can provided we credit Ron Amero.

As happenstance would have it, I received a scanned photo of my late father-in-law (Bennett Colp) who was a marine staff sargent in the RCMP, a former radio operator on a few RCMP ships and during the War, a radio operator in Iceland.

The photo shows him as a kid (guessing at about 9 yr old) sitting at the radio operator's desk of the DOT station in Canso, manned by his brother-in-law, one Ernie Clare. Below are a few sentences from my brother-in-law regarding Ernie. Photo is attached.

I thought you might find it interesting.

Ron

From my brother-in-law:

Ernie Clare worked for the old Department of Transport after coming from England originally. I think he may have been with Marconi. He reportedly had a deal when he was hired that upon retirement, the Govt. of Canada would move him and his family anywhere in the former British Commonwealth. They stayed in Dartmouth.

Since Dad was born in 1915 and he looks about 9 in the photograph I would guess this was about 1925 or so. This Dept. of Transport marine radio station was called Canso but I think it is actually at Hazel Hill just outside of Canso. He also was at Red Head outside Saint John and at Sambro. Ernie also was posted at Nottingham Island at the entrance to Hudson Bay.
