Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. McTavish came to Victoria when he was 12. He first joined the Department of Naval Service in 1920 and, during the next four years, during the period when the Department of Marine and Fisheries took over from the Department of Naval Service, he served at Estevan Point, Triangle Island, Alert Bay, Bull Harbour and Point Grey.
Then, after a 15-year period during which he worked as a ship's radio operator and for a British Columbia logging company, Mr. McTavish rejoined the federal government in the Department of Transport (DOT) in Victoria in 1941.
At a retirement party in his honor, attended by fellow workers, representatives of aviation, broadcasting and communication companies, Mr. McTavish was presented with a portable typewriter.
