“Kwai,” as he’s fondly known, passed suddenly and unexpectedly in Ottawa on May 21, 2018 after a brief illness at the age of 82 years old. He’s is survived by his wife Chooi Harn, children Chee Yin, Sukkhuan, and Sukmun, as well as their spouses Jenny, Carlos, and Damien, respectively.
To his grandchildren, he was fondly known as “Yeh Yeh” to Faith and Beth, and as “Kong Kong” to Anéliese, Rémi, Hugo, and Emmylou. His endeared names are a long held Chinese tradition. They loved him dearly.
Malaysian born of Chinese decent, Kwai later picked up French in the National Capital Region. He had many Francophone friends.
“YK” as he’s known to his siblings, is remembered in Canada, United States, Malaysia, and Aruba by Yun Foo, Yoke Kiew, Yoke Chun, Yoke Fun, and Chee Keong. He is from a large family who loved to travel and settled far and wide.
Yun-Kwai pursued a successful Engineering career with the federal governments of Malaysia and Canada as well as with private organizations, eventually starting his own business called Canadian Radio Standards Consulting Inc.
Some of his last words were “Thank You Lord for my 82 years, I’ve loved every one of them, and I know that I am a son of God”
A public Celebration of Life service will be held at the Metropolitan Bible Church in Ottawa on May 29th at 11 am with a reception to follow. His ashes will be laid to rest at Dale Cemetary in Cumberland, @ 3pm that day. All are welcome. Kwai supported Operation Smile Canada and World Vision, and he invites others to join him by supporting these charities.
Sad to say he died recently. Worked with him for many years in Radio Standards. Brian Kasper 31 May 2018
I remember Kwai as a soft spoken, nice man, that was respectful of everyone! He would explain things without speaking down to them in a manner that everyone would understand! I did not know him very well, but on each occasion he would greet me by name! May he rest in peace! John Kluver 31 May 2018
