Obituary

Andrew R. "Andy" Hodder

1918 - 2002

I came across this obituary from the past.  Andy was a dear friend at the Red Cross when we both volunteered with the Senior Amateur Radio Association.  I attended his funeral in 2002.  Time has flown by since then.

73,

HODDER, Andrew R. "Andy" - 84, Melrose Avenue, Fairview, died peacefully in the VG Site, QEII, Tuesday, September 17, 2002.

Born in Marystown, Nfld., Andy was a son of the late Fred and Sarah Hodder. Andy grew up in Fairview and after high school went to work for the National Fish Company on the Halifax waterfront.

He had a passion for radio and graduated from the Eastern Radio School, Halifax. During the Second World War, he served with the Merchant Marine until 1945, when he joined the Department of Transport. He served as a radio operator at Resolution Island in Canada's North for 16 months. Andy helped operate a weather station to navigate ships entering Hudson Bay. He had several postings on Sable Island. He retired in 1976.

His passion for radio led him to being a ham operator, VE1BV, skills that lasted his lifetime and his involvement in the Swiss Air disaster. He was a member of the Halifax Amateur Radio Club and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. He delighted in teaching his extended family and friends proficiency in sending their names in Morse Code.

Andy gave many years of volunteer service in HMS Acadia, Canadian Red Cross Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Atlantic Division. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 142, Fairview. He was a faithful and active life member of St. John's Parish, Fairview.

Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Lillian "Lilly" Hodder, Fairview; son, Randall and his wife Joy, Fall River; granddaughter, Deborah and her husband Dean; great-grandson, Nicklas, Windsor; step-grandchildren, Gerald (Lynn), Jason (Sophie), Stacey; step-great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Connor, Reiley, Olivia; brothers, George, Roy, Donald. Andy was predeceased by sisters, Ester "Etta", Ethel; brother, David; granddaughters, Sheri, Kimberly-Ann.

A Requiem Eucharist celebrating Andy's life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 20, in St. John's Anglican Church, Dutch Village Road, The Rev. Marian Burns celebrant, assisted by Father Robert Coote, Mahone Bay. Friends are warmly invited to a reception in the church following the Eucharist for greeting and refreshments. Private family interment of cremated remains will be in St. John's Columbarium, Fairview. No flowers please. Memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Atlantic Division or a charity of your choice.
